There have been a few theories that were thought to be true but have been proven to be obsolete. One theory was proposed by James Van Allen, and stated that the aurora was an overflow of the radiation belt. It was shown that the high rate that energy is dissipated by the aurora would drain all available particles available in the belt. Also, most trapped particles were in positive ions, when auroral particles are electrons. Another

Not only are auroras apparent on Earth, but they have also been spotted on Jupiter and Saturn. The Hubble Space Telescope has detected the stronger fields on the planets, as well as large radiation belts. The auroras are also powered by solar winds. An aurora has been spotted on Mars too.
